Arlene Mills Steber
91, of Watkins Glen, died Sunday, September 20, 2014 at Seneca View Skilled Nursing Home following a long illness. She was born in Walden, NY on June 6, 1923, to Benjamin and Minnie (Cole) Mills, and graduated from Walden High School in 1941. She married Frank W. Steber on Feb. 27, 1946, at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church in Ilion, NY, moving to Watkins Glen in 1955. For several years she was employed part-time at Jo’s Fashion Shop in Watkins Glen. She was a member of St. James’ Episcopal Church and was active in The Women of St. James’, serving as treasurer. Arlene also recruited and organized a large group of volunteers for the Watkins Glen Library when the present library opened in 1988, enabling it to be open week-nights and weekends, and served as coordinator of volunteers during the 90’s. She was also a volunteer for the American Cancer Society and a member of the Home Demonstration group, the “Evening Belles”. She is survived by husband Frank; son and daughter-in-law Richard (Jean) Steber of Glen, NH; son Michael Steber of Watkins Glen; son-in-law Dr. Terry Cashmore of San Diego; granddaughters Jenny (Jamie) Hoffman of Sidney, MT; Emily (Cliff) Gomes of West Haven, CT; Sarah Cashmore of Seal Beach, CA; grandsons Benjamin Steber of Glen, NH; Daniel (Caroline) Steber of Stamford, CT; great-granddaughter Rebecca Faye Hoffman of Sidney, MT; great-grandson Harrison Gomes of West Haven, CT; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her daughter, Susan Cashmore; brother, Thomas Mills; sister, Eleanor Cole; and sister-in-law, Constance Christiana. Arlene and her family extend a heartfelt thanks to Dr. Borzell and the entire staff of Unit 2, Seneca View Nursing Home for their loving and thoughtful care and concern. She was blessed to have had such personal and effective care during her 5 years there. Friends may visit family at Royce-Chedzoy Funeral Home, 212 E. 4th St., Watkins Glen, on Monday, September 29, from 6 to 8 pm. A Requiem Eucharist service will be held at St. James’ Episcopal Church on Tuesday, Sept. 30th at 11:00am, followed by a reception in the parish house.
