Charles Stamp

March 25, 1935 — January 1, 2007

Charles L. “Monty” Stamp, 71, of Rock Stream, NY, passed away January 1, 2007 after an extended battle with Parkinson’s Disease.


Calling hours will be Wednesday, January 3rd from 6 to 9 PM at the Royce Chedzoy Funeral Home, 212 East Fourth Street, Watkins Glen. Funeral Services will be Thursday, January 4th at 9:30 AM at St. Mary’s of The Lake Church, 905 N. Decatur Street, Watkins Glen, with committal service immediately following at Pleasant View Cemetery, Reading Center.


Monty was born March 25, 1935 in Cumberland, Maryland. He graduated from Watkins Glen High School in 1953 and SUNY Morrisville in 1957.


He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Lucy Hillerman Stamp, and an infant son, Theodore LaMont Stamp.


He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Beverly Smith. His sons and their families, Christopher & Elizabeth Myer, children Benjamin, Abigail and Amelia; Michael and Kaye Homet, children Brian and Allison; son David and daughter, Teresa and Randy Knapp, children Emma, Jordan and Peyton. Brother Rolland A. “Tony” and Erna Klingner. Sister Mary and Paul Smith. Many nieces, nephews and cousins.


Monty was a grape grower for 55 years and founder and president of Lakewood Vineyards Winery. His love of the land, his family and his community can be seen in his many activities and accomplishments. Some of these include: National Plowing Champion in 1958; Boy Scout Leader; Baseball Coach; Secretary/Treasurer of the New York Wine Grape Growers; Past Chief of Watkins Glen Fire Department; President of Wine Grape Growers of America; NY Farms Award; Schuyler County Hall of Fame; Grower Award, Unity Award and Winery of the Year Award from the New York Wine & Grape Foundation; Wine Family of the Year from Wineries Unlimited; Business Person of the Year from the Schuyler County Chamber of Commerce; Reading Town Supervisor from 1976 to 2006 with recent dedication of the Charles LaMont Stamp Town Complex.
