Dan Mayes

May 17, 1955 — Jul 30, 2026

Daniel J. Mayes

Age 71, of Hector, passed away unexpectedly on July 30, 2026.

He was born on May 17, 1955, in Elmira, NY, the son of Oscar F. Mayes and Ann Marie Brand Mayes. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, James L. Mayes, whom he missed dearly. He is survived by his wife, Terry; his sisters, Joanne Donnells and Margaret Thoma (Cliff Thoma); along with many nieces and nephews.

Dan graduated from Horseheads High School in 1973. He had a strong interest in business and was always reading, learning, and thinking about the next idea. He eventually became the owner of Horwitz Paper and Packaging Company. Dan was a visionary in many ways, with a curious and creative mind that always had him looking ahead.

Dan loved fast cars, classic cars, speedboats, building projects, and just about anything that involved figuring out how something worked or how he could make it better. He liked to go fast, whether on the road or on the water.  Music was a big part of Dan's life. He played guitar beautifully, had a warm singing voice, and appreciated many kinds of music, although the music of the 1970s was always among his favorites. Creedence Clearwater Revival, America, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, and many others were part of the soundtrack of his life. Dan had a great sense of humor and loved a good laugh. His friendships meant a great deal to him, and he treasured the many good friends he made throughout his life. Most of all, Dan loved his wife, Terry Spada, whom he married in July 1989. Together they shared a life filled with adventures, their home, and many years of memories. Terry was at the center of Dan's life, and he loved her deeply.

Dan also loved his dogs. They were an important part of his family and his everyday life. There was always something that interested Dan, something he was building, something he was reading about, or another idea he wanted to pursue. His curiosity stayed with him throughout his life, and he never stopped learning.

In Dan's memory, donations may be made to the Humane Society Schuyler County, 124 Marina Dr., Montour Falls, NY 14865 (or online at www.SchuylerHumane.org)

Terry, his family, his friends, and everyone who had the good fortune to know Dan will miss him greatly. He lived life with enthusiasm, loved deeply, laughed often, and left us with many stories and memories that will stay with us.
