David Wayne Karppala, Sr., a cherished resident of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and Burdett, New York, passed away unexpectedly on August 26, 2026. He will be remembered for his enduring devotion to family, boundless generosity, and unwavering faith.

Born in 1949 in Elmira, New York, he was the beloved son of Laurie Armas Karppala and Esther Dunham Wilson Karppala. David pursued higher education at SUNY Geneseo, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Physics and Mathematics, followed by a Master of Science in Physics from Oregon State University. His career was marked by significant achievements, beginning at Searle Radiographics in Chicago and leading to the founding of Kensington Imaging & Services in Oak Brook, Illinois, and Doctors Imaging Services in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He played a pivotal role in the advancement of PET imaging technology with CTI in Knoxville, Tennessee, and later founded Electric Power Savers (EPS) in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, where he made meaningful contributions to environmental preservation. As a member of the Association of Energy Engineers, he was a Certified Lighting Efficiency Professional since 1996.

David's life was rich with varied interests. He enjoyed boating, travel, and sharing meals with family. Known for his love of Pink Floyd, college football, and the Oregon State Beavers, he was a man deeply dedicated to his family and those in need.

Actively involved with Lions Clubs International in Fairfield, Pennsylvania, David served as Past President and earned the affectionate title "The Candy Man" for his leadership in their candy-making fundraisers. His humor and storytelling endeared him to many.

A devoted Christian, David embodied his faith through his actions, living by the Golden Rule. He was a source of wisdom and support as the patriarch of his family. His beloved wife of nearly 40 years, Susan Lynn Caron Karppala, and his six children—Katherine, Christopher, Kevin, Danielle, David Jr., and Clifford—were the center of his world.

David is also survived by his siblings, Laurie, Aaron, Shirley, Esther, Faith, and Deborah, along with his grandchildren, Skyler, Landon, and Zoey, who brought immense joy to his life.

His influence and warmth will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. A memorial service will be held on September 6, from 2 PM to 4 PM, with a service at 4 PM at Royce-Chedzoy Funeral Home, Watkins Glen, New York, followed by a Celebration of Life reception. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fairfield Lions Club, PO Box 161, Fairfield, PA 17320. A future service in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, will be announced.
