David Wayne Karppala, Sr., a cherished resident of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and Burdett, New York, departed this life unexpectedly on August 26, 2026. His legacy is one of enduring family devotion, boundless generosity, authentic friendship, and unwavering faith.

Born in 1949 in Elmira, New York, he was the beloved son of Laurie Armas Karppala and Esther Dunham Wilson Karppala.

David's academic journey led him to SUNY Geneseo, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Physics and Mathematics, followed by a Master of Science in Physics from Oregon State University. His professional path was marked by remarkable achievements. He was initially with Searle Radiographics in Chicago, then founded Kensington Imaging & Services in Oak Brook, Illinois and Doctors Imaging Services in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Notably, David joined CTI in Knoxville, Tennessee, to contribute to the nascent PET imaging technology. His visionary spirit continued with the establishment of Electric Power Savers (EPS) in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, making meaningful contributions to environmental preservation. A member of the Association of Energy Engineers, he was a Certified Lighting Efficiency Professional since 1996.

David was a man of diverse passions. He delighted in boating, travel, and sharing meals with family. His love for Pink Floyd, college football, and the Oregon State Beavers were well-known. While being a frugal man, himself, he doted on his family and those in need.

The essence of David's character was revealed through his altruism. Known for his active involvement with Lions Clubs International in Fairfield, Pennsylvania, he served as Past President and earned the affectionate title, "The Candy Man," for his leadership in their candy-making fundraisers. His humor and storytelling endeared him to many.

A devoted Christian, David embodied his faith by living according to the Golden Rule. As the patriarch, he provided wisdom and support to his family, whom he valued above all else. His beloved wife of nearly 40 years, Susan Lynn Caron Karppala, and his six children—Katherine, Christopher, Kevin, Danielle, David Jr., and Clifford—were the center of his world.

David is also survived by his siblings, Laurie, Aaron, Shirley, Esther, Faith, and Deborah, along with three beloved grandchildren, Skyler, Landon, and Zoey, who brought immense joy to his life.

His influence and warmth will forever linger in the hearts of those privileged to know him. A memorial service is scheduled for September 6, from 2PM to 4PM, with a service at 4PM at Royce-Chedzoy Funeral Home, Watkins Glen, New York. A Celebration of Life reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Fairfield Lions Club, PO Box 161, Fairfield, PA 17320. A future service in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, will be announced.
