Dave Moat, 81, a longtime resident of Hector, NY, passed away peacefully on August 16, 2025.
Born and raised in Binghamton, NY, Dave spent his childhood there before proudly serving eight years in the United States Air Force, including a tour in Vietnam. After his service, he traveled the world building factories, creating lasting memories across many countries. Despite his journeys, Dave found his heart in Hector, where he retired and often remarked that although he had been all over the world, Hector, NY, was one of the most beautiful places he had ever seen. Dave always said, “Hector has a community like none other, it is a special place.”
Dave had a passion for camping, exploring the outdoors, traveling, and building meaningful connections with family and friends. He loved to party and dance, always bringing energy, laughter, and warmth wherever he went. A natural storyteller, he treasured listening to others’ experiences just as much as sharing his own. Even in his final days, Dave’s enthusiasm for life never wavered. He was always making plans, dreaming of what was ahead, and reminding those around him, “You have to keep dreaming—it’s what keeps you going.” Dave will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Dave is survived by his daughter, Tamera Wilmot and her significant other Rich Yohonn; grandchildren, Coleman, Kenzie, Croix and Karlen. His son, Kenneth Moat and Misty Rich; and grandchildren, Adriana, Cassidy, Lincoln and Silas; mother of their children and dear friend, Janet Strauss Moat; daughter, Daphne Holland and her husband Keath Milligan; brother Keith Moat and his wife Donna; sister Sheila Thorpe and her husband John; and sister, Paula Burrows and her husband Mark; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Dave is predeceased by his father Warren Moat, his mother Beverly Moat Leonard, his wonderful companion Cheryl Elshaug, and his loyal dog, Jazzy.
