George Jones

George Lennon Jones, 83, departed on Tuesday July 10, 2012. He was born September 19, 1928 in Wilmington, North Carolina. George was the son of the late Harvey McKinley Jones and Annie Louise Sampson Jones. After graduating from Williston Industrial High School, class of 1947, he then attended Hampton University in Virginia. The Jones Family relocated to Copiague, New York on Long Island, where George worked in his fathers’ shoe shop business. George was drafted into the Army in 1951 for 2 years. He continued as a reservist in the Armed Forces until 1958. In 1955, George married Edythe Joy Smith and continued to live in Copiague, New York where they raised their daughter Rena Elizabeth Jones Presti of Palm Coast, Florida. For 31 years he worked as a manager of Sam Axinn Lumber Company in Amityville, New York. George was a member of the American Legion Post 1218 and Breezy Point Yacht Club in Amityville, New York. He attended St. Boniface Episcopal Church in Lindenhurst, New York. George and Edythe retired to Watkins Glen, New York in 1996 where he was a member of St. James Episcopal Church. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers Harvey McKinley Jones Jr., William Leroy Jones, and Hillary Joseph Jones. George is survived by his wife Edythe Joy Smith Jones, daughter Rena Elizabeth Jones Presti, son-in-law Vincent John Presti, grandson Vincent George Presti, brother Fredrick Leon Jones, sisters Mildred Eliza Quick, Rizpah Louise Welch, Gladys Louquin Taylor, Lois Demetra Hunter, Emma Matrina Beach, brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends. The family will hold a viewing and mass at St. Boniface Episcopal Church in Lindenhurst, New York on Saturday, July 14th, 2012 at 1:30pm. The family will be present to receive friends and relatives at the church from 12:15-1:30pm. Interment will be at Pinelawn Memorial Park, Pinelawn, Long Island, New York.
