Janet C. Cotton
Age 96, of Montour Falls, passed away on July 9, 2013 in the comfort of her own home. Born on April 12, 1917 in Wellsboro, PA, the daughter of George R. and Marium H. Crites, where her father was the superintendent of the Corning Glass Works plant. She moved to Corning with her family and graduated from Corning Free Academy. She continued her education at Rochester Business Institute and earned an Associate’s Degree in 1937, and began working for the Corning Glass Works. She married D. Lloyd Cotton at the First Presbyterian Church of Corning in 1939 and moved to Watkins Glen. Their son Douglas was born in 1940. In 1941 they built a home at 103 Turner Park in Montour Falls. Their daughter, Linda, was born in 1943. Janet was the matriarch of a family that includes 2 children, 5 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. During her life she was totally devoted to her family, church and community. Some of her most fond memories include, being a member and supporter of the Watkins Glen First Presbyterian Church since 1939, and serving as an Elder and selected as “Women Of The Year” in 2005; being a Brownie and Girl Scout leader for 6 years; WWII support (USO) at the Sampson Naval Base; a member and president of the Schuyler Hospital Auxiliary from 1941-2002; representing Schuyler County on the first LPGA Board of Directors; original member of two bridge clubs, one starting in 1940. She also loved to bowl, play golf and filled her days in her beautiful garden. She is predeceased by her parents, husband and sister, Constance Prescott. Survivors include her son, Douglas Cotton and his wife Susan of Horseheads; and her daughter, Linda Ross and her husband Rodney of Corning ; 5 grandchildren, Amy (Donald, Jr.) Lynn, Mark Cotton, Iva Marie (Randall) Scott, Douglas (Sueann) Lovell, and Melinda (Rodney) Weaver; also 13 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. A celebration of Janet’s life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Watkins Glen at 11:00am on Friday, July 19, 2013. The Rev. Beverly Karr-Lyon will officiate, followed by a reception at the church and internment at Montour Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 520 N. Decatur St., Watkins Glen, NY 14891 or Schuyler Hospital Auxiliary, 220 Steuben St., Montour Falls, NY 14865.
