John L. Vona

Age 89, of Watkins Glen, passed away July 31, 2024. 

The family will receive friends and relatives at Royce-Chedzoy Funeral Home, 212 E. 4th St., Watkins Glen on Thursday (Aug 8th) from 1-3pm and 6-8pm. A funeral mass will be held on Friday (Aug 9th) at 11:00am at St. Mary’s of the Lake Catholic Church, 905 N. Decatur St., Watkins Glen; followed by a reception. He will be buried with military honors on Monday (Aug 12th) at 11:30am, at St. Columbkille Cemetery, E. Bayard St, Seneca Falls.

John was born in Seneca Falls, the son of Sisto and Angeline Vona. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Beverly; son John D. (Tammy) Vona; daughters, Lynn Vona, and Kathleen Vona Winters (Michael Winters); two grandchildren, Philip Vona, and Courtney (Adam) Benware; and faithful friend Jax. 

He was a teacher at Watkins Glen Central School for 35 years, retiring in 1995. He served as a Watkins Glen Village Trustee; Chairman for the Schuyler County Democratic Committee and Election Commissioner. John was a communicant of St. Mary’s of the Lake Church; and was a member of the Elks Lodge, Improved Order of Redman, Knights of Columbus, and Moose Club.
