June Voorheis

October 26, 1945 — May 3, 2017

June Eloise Voorheis passed away peacefully at home on the evening of May 3, 2017 surrounded and comforted by members of her adoring family. In their grief, the family is comforted knowing that their beloved one has been released from her suffering. June was born on October 26, 1945 in Towanda, PA. The family moved to Jacksonville and June spent much of her childhood on a farm in Ithaca. She attended a one-room schoolhouse in her early grade school years and later attended Charles O. Dickerson High School in Trumansburg. At a young age, June married Lawrence D. Banfield Sr. and together they had four children. She later married Douglas Voorheis, who had an active and supportive role in raising June's children. In recent years June and Doug adopted their great grand-son Matthew Voorheis Bain and were raising him together with great love and devotion. June was predeceased by her parents Arthur Fleet and Edna Carl; as well as by her sister Janet Bullivant. She is survived by her husband, Douglas W. Voorheis; by her sister, Ann Swartwood; brothers Robert (Dorothy) Fleet and Stephen (Cecilia) Fleet; and half-brother Simeon (Polly) Jackson. June is also survived by her children, Brenda (Michael) Cooper, Jacqueline (Jake) Jacobs, Bridget (Thomas) Lorow, and Lawrence (Patti) Banfield Jr; her two step-children, Dennis (Sonya) Voorheis and Wendy Edwards, and by her sixteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. June worked until her retirement in the Mail Center at Ithaca College where she developed and maintained many lasting friendships. She is remembered for her open heartedness, her sense of humor, and her deep love of family. It is well known that June was happiest when she was in the company of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She also treasured spending time in nature, gardening, watching her birds, and sitting in her front porch rocker watching the seasons pass by. June enters a new season of her life now, and she will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her so much. The family will be present to receive friends at the Royce-Chedzoy Funeral Home at 212 E. 4th Street in Watkins Glen, NY on Tuesday May 9th 12:00-2:00 PM. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM at the funeral home, with graveside service at 3:15 at Hector Union Cemetery in Burdett. The family asks that contributions in June's memory be made to the Burdett Fire Company 3830 Willow Street, Burdett, NY 14818. You may express condolences to the Family online at www.RoyceChedzoy.com
