Robert “Bud” Putnam, 90, of Burdett, New York, passed away on October 18, 2026.
Born on September 4, 1936, in Towanda, Pennsylvania, Bud was the son of Donald and Thelma Bailey Putnam. He grew up in Mansfield, Pennsylvania, and later married Eliene Benson on March 31, 1956, beginning a marriage that spanned 70 years. Together, they built a life centered on family, love, and countless memories.
Bud worked at Westinghouse in Horseheads, New York, before retiring from Robinson Lumber in Odessa, New York. A talented carpenter and woodworker, Bud had a gift for making things with his hands. He contributed greatly to transforming the family lake house into a year-round home, helping create a special place for generations of family to gather. Over the years, he made countless things for his children and grandchildren, leaving behind not only treasured keepsakes but a lasting reminder of his love and craftsmanship.
Bud had a deep love for Seneca Lake, where he and Eliene made their home and where family gathered to spend time together. In his younger years, he loved water skiing, a passion for the water that he passed along to his grandchildren. The lake became the backdrop for countless family memories and a place that will always hold a special meaning for those who loved him.
Quiet and easygoing, Bud found joy in the simple things, especially time spent with his family. He was a devoted grandfather who attended as many of his grandchildren’s sporting events and dance performances as he could. Whether he was cheering them on, creating something special with his hands, or simply enjoying time together at the lake, Bud showed his love in ways that will never be forgotten.
Bud is survived by his wife, Eliene; his daughters, Leslie (Greg) Updyke of Beaver Dams, New York, and Amy (Matt) Schneider of Waterford, Virginia; and his six grandchildren, James, Josh, and Emma Updyke, and Cassidy, Will, and Drew Schneider. He is also survived by his siblings Marilyn Doud, James Putnam, and Kathy Clark.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Donald, Richmond, William Putnam, and Suzi Grant.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Care First for the compassionate care and kindness shown to Bud in his final days.
Bud leaves behind a legacy of love, family, and craftsmanship. His hands built and created things that will be treasured for generations, but perhaps his greatest legacy is the family he loved so dearly and the memories he helped create. He will be deeply missed at the lake, at family gatherings, and in all the everyday moments that made life special.
In keeping with one of Bud’s favorite daily traditions, we invite everyone who knew and loved him to raise a glass at 4 PM in his honor. Pour yourself a Manhattan, think of Bud, and celebrate a life well lived. Cheers to Bud!
A celebration of life and burial will take place at a later date, at the convenience of the family. Arrangements with Royce-Chedzoy Funeral Home, Watkins Glen. (RoyceChedzoy.com)
