Roberta Dannenfelser Flowers
Of Hector, passed away on Sunday, September 3, 2017 at Highland Hospital in Rochester, NY after a courageous eight-year battle with ovarian cancer. Roberta was born on September 2, 1943 in New London, Connecticut. Her parents were the late Robert and Virginia Dannenfelser. Roberta graduated from Hunter College High School in Manhattan. She then attended Hunter College in the Bronx (now Lehman College of the City University of New York) and earned a degree in elementary education. She taught for several years at an elementary school in the South Bronx as a science specialist. Later she was asked to join the staff of the newly formed Medgar Evers College of the City University of New York as Director of Admissions and Foreign Student Advisor. She met her husband, John Flowers, who was a chemistry professor at Medgar Evers. They were married on April 25, 1987 and lived in the Bronx, NY. In 1990 Roberta and John had a house constructed in Hector, NY. Her parents, Virginia and Robert Dannenfelser lived in the house while Roberta and John were still working in Brooklyn. Roberta and John moved from the Bronx to Hector in 2006. Roberta was a member of the Hector Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school to the children, and served several terms as a member of the session. She was a volunteer for the Hector Library. She was a member of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and worked with the Timing and Scoring Team at Watkins Glen International and Lime Rock Park at the SCCA races. She volunteered for the Hector Public Library. Finally, she was a member of Zonta and served several years as secretary. Roberta is survived by her loving husband, John, her brother Steve, nephews Christopher and Damian, nieces Jenny Kay, Dawn, and Candy as well as by several grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Bobby. A MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR ROBERTA WILL BE HELD AT 2:00 PM AT THE HECTOR PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH IN HECTOR ON SUNDAY, JUNE 3. ON SATURDAY JUNE 2, CALLING HOURS WILL BE HELD FROM 6-8 PM AT ROYCE-CHEDZOY FUNERAL HOME, 212 E. 4TH STREET IN WATKINS GLEN.
