Warren L. Coats
89, of Montour Falls and formerly Mecklenburg, passed away on September 25, 2011.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Barbara Coats; sons, Frederick (Laurie) Heimes of Evergreen, CO, and Peter (Liz) Coats of Mecklenburg, NY; sister, Rena (Ray) Kist of Boston, NY; brother-in-law, Don Butcher of Fredonia, NY; two grandchildren, Shane Coats and Lauren Coats; loving nieces and nephews; and much loved couple, Ed and Karen Riley. He was predeceased by his parents, Stewart J. and Clara (Canfield) Coats; and a sister, LaVona Butcher.
The family will receive friends and relatives at the Royce-Chedzoy Funeral Home, 212 E. 4th St., Watkins Glen, on Friday, October 14, from 2-4pm and 6-8pm. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, Oct 15, 2011 at 11:00am at the Mecklenburg United Methodist Church, 6063 Turnkpike Rd., Mecklenburg. A reception and Firemen’s Service will follow at the Mecklenburg Fire Company. Warren graduated from Odessa High School in 1939. As a veteran of WWII, he served in the US Army-Air Corp with the 11th Bomb Group H, in the Pacific Theatre from 1942-1945. He later graduated from the school of Agricultural Engineering at Cornell in 1949. He worked for Therm, Inc and later as a broker for the Patterson Real Estate Company of Ithaca. With his wife Barbara, they also owned and operated the Mecklenburg Grocery store for several years. Warren served on the Schuyler County Legislature. He was a member of the American Legion Post #676 of Odessa. As a life and charter member, and past Chief, he served at the Mecklenburg Volunteer Fire Company for 65 years. He was a member and past Trustee of the Mecklenburg United Methodist Church.
