Winifred "Winnie" Covert
76, of Trumansburg, NY, passed away at Cayuga Medical Center on January 9, 2012, surrounded by her loving and devoted husband of 53 years, Stanley, and her beloved son Daniel, daughter-in-law Shelly, Shelly's mother, Karen Thurnheer, and her beloved grandchildren Vanessa, Valerie and Ethan. Winnie was born August 1, 1935, one of seven children, to Victor and Golda Switzer Rumsey. She is survived by her husband, Stanley; son, Daniel (Shelly); grandchildren, Vanessa, Valerie and Ethan; sister, Freda (Bill) Covert of DeRuyter; sisters-in-law, Joan Rumsey of Red Creek; Margaret Covert of Watkins Glen; Angelina Covert of Burdett; brothers-in-law, William (Ann) Covert of Corning; Norman (Ruth) Covert of Burdett, Walter Watkins of Red Creek, Jerry Chamberlin of Raeford, NC; and many uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. She had many close friends, and school mates from the Trumansburg Central School Class of 1953. Winnie retired from NCR Ithaca in 1999 with 36 years of service. She was a wonderful, giving, and caring person to all throughout her life. She enjoyed her many close Car Pride friends, working outside, keeping her home neat, and of course, shopping on the QVC Network. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren. Winnie fought a very courageous battle with cancer over the past year. The family will receive friends and relatives at the Royce-Chedzoy Funeral Home, 212 E. 4th St., Watkins Glen; on Saturday (Jan. 14th) from 12-2pm; with a memorial service immediately following at 2:00pm; interment at Union Cemetery, Burdett. Memorial donations may be made in Winnie's memory to the Calvary Baptist Church, PO Box 413, Trumansburg, NY, 14886; or the American Cancer Society, 1316 College Ave., Elmira, NY 14901.
